Police in Shibganj, Bogura, have arrested two men in connection with the killing of a rice-mill owner, Mohammad Ali Sarkar, 50, who was beaten to death with a hammer by a gang that had come to steal his mill’s transformer. The two were arrested three days after the incident with the help of information technology and secret intelligence, police said, adding that the men face several cases including theft, robbery and murder.

The arrested men are Shafiqul Islam, 43, son of Abdur Rashid of Putkhor village in Atmul union of Shibganj upazila, and Abdul Alim, 40, son of Abdul Barik Sakidar of Kathgara village in the same union.

According to police, Mohammad Ali Sarkar had dinner at home at around 11:30pm on July 5 and then went to guard his rice mill near the local Fultala Eidgah ground. At about 1:30am, a gang of five to six people entered the mill to steal its transformer.

Sensing what was happening, Mohammad Ali Sarkar tried to stop them, police said, and the intruders tied his hands and feet with rope. When he recognised some of them, they struck him repeatedly on the head with a hammer for fear their identities would be exposed, killing him on the spot before removing the transformer and fleeing.

Police said they later carried out a raid and arrested the two men based on technological assistance and secret intelligence.

Md Shahinuzzaman Shahin, the officer-in-charge of Shibganj police station, said Shafiqul Islam faced five cases and Abdul Alim faced several cases for robbery, murder and other offences. The two were sent to jail through the court on Friday afternoon, he said, adding that police operations were continuing to arrest the others involved in the killing.
