PANCHAGARH — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) began the national parliament by violating the July charter, said Sarjis Alam, northern region chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP).

Alam spoke to reporters Thursday afternoon, March 12, after a scholarship award ceremony at the Panchagarh government auditorium grounds.

“BNP is not sending a good message to the people of Bangladesh,” Alam said. “Under the July charter, while the speaker would come from the ruling party, the deputy speaker was to come from the opposition. Instead, BNP’s Kaiser Kamal has been appointed. Even the speaker and deputy speaker were sworn in by the president of the fascist government. By doing so, BNP has begun acting in the tail of the autocratic government, which has hurt us.”

Warning the current government, Alam said, “The people and BNP workers also voted yes in the referendum so the July charter would be implemented, the genocide tried and reforms completed. If anyone ignores those demands and works against the people, parliament cannot function normally.”

Alam said, “In our first session, we sought the impeachment of the president. The sooner the president resigns and the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi is tried, the better for the government.”

He accused the ruling party of “election engineering” in the parliamentary election. “There has been manipulation in some targeted seats in the national election. BNP workers and leaders went to polling centers carrying journalists’ cards and influenced results. In the local government election, we will not allow this kind of engineering. The 11-party alliance will firmly resist any such conspiracy this time.”

Earlier, laptops, bicycles and certificates were distributed to meritorious students from grades 4 to 10 at an event organized by the Kishorkantha Pathak Foundation. District Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Ikbal Hossain and Chhatra Shibir president Rashed Islam were among the local leaders present.
