PANCHAGARH — A police officer was attacked Thursday while trying to arrest a suspect in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh, with the suspect splitting his head with a sharp weapon before fleeing.

Officer Banamali Roy was being treated at the upazila health complex after the suspect’s blade gashed his head.

The incident took place Thursday afternoon in the Haguragachh area of Shalbahan union in the upazila.

The suspect who fled was identified as Rasel Islam, 33, of Lohakachi village in Shalbahan union. He faces multiple charges of stealing rickshaw vans and cattle over a long period. The injured officer, Banamali Roy, is posted at the Tetulia model police station.

Two cows were stolen Wednesday night from the cattle shed of Sharif Uddin in Lohakachi village, police said. The owner filed a complaint against Rasel. Acting on the complaint, a police team led by Tetulia station Sub-Inspector Badiuzzaman surrounded Rasel’s house Thursday afternoon to arrest him.

After confirming the suspect was inside, officer Banamali Roy went to the door. Rasel suddenly opened the door, struck Banamali on the head with a country-made weapon and fled, police said. Other officers then took the injured officer to the upazila health complex.

“The injured officer received four stitches to his head,” said Mahfuza Munir Purba, a doctor at the emergency department of Tetulia Health Complex. “He is now receiving treatment at the hospital.”

Rashedul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tetulia model police station, said Rasel faces multiple cases for stealing rickshaw vans and cattle and that police have been trying to arrest him for a long time. Another cattle-theft case was filed Thursday morning, he said. Acting on a tip-off Thursday afternoon, police went to arrest him but he attacked them and fled, Rashedul said. A drive to arrest him is underway.
