PANCHAGARH — All 38 candidates were eliminated from a village police recruitment test in Panchagarh’s Tetulia upazila after none could correctly write out the national anthem within the allotted time, officials said.
The recruitment and selection test was held at the upazila parishad hall room Wednesday, officials said.
The process was launched to fill five mahalladar posts of village police across the Tirnaihat, Tetulia, Shalbahan and Debnagar union parishads of Tetulia upazila, according to the upazila administration. A total of 38 candidates applied. Their physical fitness was tested first. As part of a merit assessment ordered by the recruitment committee, candidates were then given 15 minutes to write the national anthem. No candidate was able to write the anthem completely and correctly within the time limit, officials said. As a result, the selection committee could not complete the recruitment process, and a new round will be conducted later, officials said.
Members of the selection committee included S.M. Akash, the Tetulia assistant commissioner (land); Rashedul Islam, the officer in charge of Tetulia Model Police Station; Idris Ali Khan, the upazila engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED); the upazila Ansar and VDP officer; and chairmen of the relevant union parishads, officials said.
Afroz Shaheen Khasru, the Tetulia upazila executive officer (UNO) and head of the recruitment committee, expressed surprise at the outcome. “After physical fitness tests, the merit assessment showed that, very unfortunately, no candidate could write our national anthem correctly,” Khasru said. “Basic general knowledge and a sense of patriotism are essential for anyone being recruited to a job.”
