DHAKA — The BNP-led alliance will win 36 of the 50 reserved women’s seats in the national Parliament, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance will get 13, and independent candidates will get one, Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said.
The election for the reserved women’s seats will be held on May 12, the commission announced Monday following its 11th meeting at the Election Building in Agargaon.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said five items were discussed at the meeting. The commission decided to announce the schedule for the reserved women’s seat elections, which will be published on April 8, 2026, with voting to take place on May 12. The detailed schedule will be announced later, he said.
He said six independent candidates are contesting jointly as an alliance. The BNP’s alliance partners include Jonayed Saki, Nurul Haque Nur and Andaleeve Rahman Partho’s party. Jamaat-e-Islami’s allies include the NCP and Khelafat Andolan. Rumin Farhana has said she will not join any alliance. As a result, the BNP alliance will receive 36 seats, the Jamaat alliance 13 and independent candidates one.
On Feb. 12, voting was held in 299 of the 300 seats of the 13th national Parliament. Voting was suspended in Sherpur-3 after a valid candidate died. A by-election will also be held in Bogura-6 after Tarique Rahman vacated the seat. The Election Commission has not yet released results for Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 due to legal complications.
