DHAKA — A war crimes tribunal will deliver its verdict on Thursday, April 9, in the case of Abu Sayeed, a Begum Rokeya University student in Rangpur killed during the 2024 anti-discrimination protests, court officials said.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, set the date on March 5, officials said. The tribunal formally took cognizance of charges against 30 defendants, including the university’s then-vice chancellor Hasibur Rashid, on June 30.
During the trial, 25 witnesses, including the investigating officer, testified, officials said. Six of the 30 defendants are in custody. They are former proctor Shariful Islam, former assistant registrar Rafiul Hasan Rasel, former contractual registrar’s office employee Md. Anwar Parvez, former assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain, former constable Sujon Chandra Roy, and Imran Chowdhury, also known as Akash, a leader of the banned Chhatra League.
Sayeed, an English department student and one of the coordinators of the movement, was shot dead by police at Park Mor in front of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur on July 16, 2024, during the quota reform protests. A video showing him standing in front of police with his arms outstretched and his chest bared went viral nationwide and helped turn the student protests into a mass uprising.
