DHAKA — Emergency services at Dhaka Medical College Hospital were suspended Wednesday after a clash erupted between hospital doctors and Dhaka University students over a prescription dispute, officials said.

The incident began Wednesday afternoon, April 8, hospital officials said. Witnesses said an argument first broke out between intern doctors and Dhaka University students over an issue and later escalated into a physical confrontation.

Several people on both sides were injured, witnesses said.

Doctors at the hospital’s emergency department said the dispute began when a Dhaka University student came in for treatment in the afternoon. The attending physician wrote a prescription, but advised the student to buy the medicine from outside because it was not available in the hospital’s government supply, doctors said.

The student returned a short time later with several friends and began arguing with the attending physicians, complaining that the prescribed medicine could not be found outside. The argument escalated, and the students attacked the doctors, leading to a brawl, doctors said. The situation grew tense, with repeated chases between the two sides. After news of the clash spread, intern doctors called a work stoppage and shut down the emergency department, citing safety concerns.
