KHULNA, Bangladesh — A woman was killed by her son with a tree branch in Khulna’s Rupsa upazila on Friday morning, and an angry mob attacked police as they tried to take the accused into custody, officials said.
The incident took place around 8:30 a.m. in Khan Mohammadpur village in the Aichgati Union of the upazila. Police arrested the accused son shortly after the incident, but an angry crowd attacked officers as they tried to free him, police said. The slain woman was identified as Mimmi Begum, 44, wife of Hamidul Islam, a resident of Khan Mohammadpur village. The accused, Nadim Islam, has been detained by police.
Police and local sources said an argument broke out Friday morning between Nadim Islam and his mother, Mimmi Begum, over a family dispute. At one point, Nadim broke a branch from a tree near the home and struck his mother in the head, the sources said. Seriously injured, she collapsed at the scene and died before residents could take her to a hospital.
Md. Ujjwal Hossain, the officer-in-charge of the Aichgati police camp in Rupsa upazila, said officers reached the scene around 8:30 a.m. after receiving word from residents. Nadim Islam was detained there, but a group of locals tried to block officers as they were bringing him to the camp and at one point launched a sudden attack on police, he said. Residents said Nadim had been behaving abnormally for some time. Police are investigating whether the killing was driven by a family feud or some other cause.
