PABNA — A court in Pabna denied bail Wednesday to Nishi Rahman, 38, accused of drowning eight puppies in a sack in a pond in Ishwardi, and ordered her sent to jail, officials said.

Rahman was transferred from Ishwardi police station to Pabna Senior Judicial Magistrate Court No. 2 on Wednesday afternoon. After the hearing, Magistrate Tarikul Islam denied bail and ordered her sent to jail.

The case was filed at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, by Aklima Khatun, the livestock officer of Ishwardi upazila, naming Rahman as the accused. Police arrested her at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday from a rented house in Ishwardi pourashava.

Rahman is the wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayan, an officer with the Small Farmer Development Foundation under the Rural Development and Cooperatives Department in Ishwardi.

The drowning of the eight puppies has shocked people across the country and stirred outrage among animal lovers. The mother dog, having lost her eight pups, still shows signs of mourning. At times, she goes to the door of the union office and wails loudly.

Since Wednesday morning, the mother dog has been seen wandering around the upazila executive officer’s office and the upazila compound searching for her puppies. Crowds of women and men have gathered daily at the Ishwardi upazila parishad compound to witness the grief-stricken animal, condemning the killing and demanding exemplary punishment for the accused.
