PABNA — Two children drowned Friday while bathing in the Boral River in Faridpur upazila of Pabna, police said.

The victims were identified as Tinni Khatun, 11, and Zubayer Ahmed, 7. They drowned around 2 p.m. Friday in the Garal River in the Uttar Thanapara area of the upazila. Their bodies were recovered from the river in the afternoon.

Tinni was the daughter of Abu Sama, a local ward councilor, and Zubayer was the son of Alamgir Hossain, also from the same area. The two were cousins.

Locals said the children went to the river next to their home around 2 p.m. without their families’ knowledge. They drowned because they did not know how to swim. When relatives and neighbors could not find them at home, they began searching.

A search of the river in the afternoon recovered the bodies. The children were taken to Gopalnagar government health center, where the duty doctor declared them dead.

Faridpur police station Officer-in-Charge Hasnat Zaman said the bodies were handed over to the families because no complaint was filed.
