Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the achievement of August 5 belonged to no single individual or political party, but to “every peace-loving and democracy-seeking person in the country, regardless of party affiliation.”

He made the remarks on Saturday at the July National Conference, held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Agargaon, Dhaka. The event was organized by the “July 24 Shaheed Family” and “We Are July Fighters” central committee, with injured July uprising veterans and families of those killed in attendance.

In an emotional address, the prime minister spoke about his family’s suffering under the previous government. “If I could ask my mother right now — after the mental and physical torture she endured for 17 years — whether she would want me to take revenge, because God has given me that power, I am certain she would tell me: your duty is to unite everyone in the country and move forward,” he said.

He said the same was true of his brother. “If I could ask my brother, who was wronged, who was pushed to the brink of death — whether he would want me to take revenge — he would have given the same answer as my mother. We grew up together. I know him. The same blood flows through our veins,” the prime minister said.
