Faridpur DB officer withdrawn after Chhatra League worker dies in custody

The officer-in-charge (OC) of the Faridpur Sadar Zone of the district police’s detective branch (DB), Syed Md Alamgir Hossen, has been withdrawn after a Chhatra League worker died in DB custody in Madhukhali, Faridpur. The decision was conveyed in an office order signed by the Superintendent of Police of Faridpur, Nazrul Islam, on Tuesday noon.

The order said OC Syed Md Alamgir Hossen had been withdrawn from the DB Sadar Zone for administrative reasons and directed to report to the Faridpur Police Lines by 1 p.m. the same day. The order took effect immediately.

Confirming the matter, the Superintendent of Police of Faridpur, Nazrul Islam, said the officer had been withdrawn for administrative reasons and attached to the Police Lines.

The Chhatra League worker was Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed, 27. He was a resident of the West Gondardia area of Madhukhali municipality and a student of Faridpur Law College.

The family alleges that DB police detained Ishtiaq on Saturday afternoon and beat him in front of his mother. He died in custody at around 8 a.m. the next day, Sunday, while under treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital, they said.
