Khalil al-Hayya has been named the new head of the political bureau of the Palestinian armed group Hamas, succeeding Yahya Sinwar. In a statement, Hamas said al-Hayya had been chosen as head of its political bureau.
Yahya Sinwar was killed in an Israeli forces’ operation in Gaza in October 2024, after which there had been talk of a change in Hamas’s top leadership. Al-Hayya’s importance in the group’s leadership had grown after the deaths of several of its senior leaders last year.
In 2024, Hamas’s then political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran. Later, Yahya Sinwar and the head of the group’s military wing, Mohammed Deif, were also killed in Gaza. Sinwar had taken over the leadership of Hamas after Haniyeh’s death, but he too was killed in an Israeli operation late the same year. The group’s political leadership has now been given to Khalil al-Hayya.
