Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized a new type of drug called “kush” in a special anti-drug drive in Satkhira and detained one person. BGB claims the 12kg of “kush” recovered is worth about 6 crore taka. With a seized motorcycle and two mobile phones, the total value of the recovered items is 6.0352 crore taka.
The Satkhira Battalion (33 BGB) carried out the drive in the Madhabkathi Bazaar area of Satkhira Sadar upazila at around 12:30pm on Thursday (6 August). The details were given in a press release later in the afternoon.
BGB said that, acting on secret information that “kush” would be taken by motorcycle from Satkhira city to the Jhaudanga Bazaar area, a special battalion team took position in the Madhabkathi Bazaar area. A suspected motorcyclist, Md Tariquzzaman (24), was then stopped and searched. He is a resident of Keragachi village in Kolaroa upazila. The search recovered 12kg of “kush” from him, along with a motorcycle and two mobile phones.
According to BGB, the 12kg of “kush” is worth about 6 crore taka, the seized motorcycle 2 lakh taka and the two mobile phones 1.52 lakh taka — a total of 6.0352 crore taka.
In initial questioning, Tariquzzaman claimed to BGB that he did not know what was in the bag. He said an acquaintance near the Satkhira Zilla Parishad had asked him to deliver a bag to the Jhaudanga area, with no payment, and that he was detained on the way to deliver it, only later learning the bag contained “kush.” The truth of this account will be verified through investigation, officials said.
BGB said “kush” is a drug prepared mainly from the flowers or buds of the marijuana plant. In various countries, extra tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is mixed into it and it is marketed in liquid, powder or tablet form.
Satkhira Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Ashikur Rahman said BGB was conducting regular drives to prevent drug smuggling along the battalion’s 54km border with India. He said that, alongside law-enforcement agencies, everyone needed to step forward to raise social and family awareness to control drugs.
The process of taking necessary legal action against the detainee is under way, BGB said.
