Lightning strike and drowning kill 2 in Shyamnagar

A woman died in a lightning strike and a farmer drowned in separate incidents Monday in the Dhumghat area of Ishwaripur union in Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira.

Local sources said Khairunnesa, 40, was killed by lightning at about 1 p.m. while working in a field near her home in Moterchak village. She was the wife of Abdul Aziz Gazi.

A relative and local union council member, Md Abul Kalam, said Khairunnesa died at the scene when lightning struck as she worked in the field.

In the second incident, farmer Krishnapada Baidya, 50, drowned in a pond in Shiltala village at about 10 a.m. He was the son of the late Narayan Baidya.

Family members said Baidya accidentally fell into a roadside pond while heading to a field for farm work. Relatives began searching after he was missing for a long time and later recovered his body from the pond.

Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiul Alam Patwari said a woman had died in a lightning strike and police were investigating the farmer’s drowning.
