The Bangladesh Labor Welfare Federation held a representative conference in Chuadanga on Saturday (July 11). The conference took place at 10 a.m. at the Chamber and Commerce building near the Chuadanga bus terminal.

Conducted by the federation’s Chuadanga district secretary, Mohsin Emdadullah Jamen, and presided over by the district branch president, Kaiyum Uddin Hirok, the conference had the federation’s central president, advocate Atiqur Rahman, as chief guest. Special guests included central joint secretary general Md. Aktaruzzaman, Chuadanga district Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Md. Ruhul Amin, MP, Chuadanga district Jamaat assistant secretary advocate Masud Parvez Rasel, MP, and Meherpur federation president Abdur Rauf Mukul. Meherpur district secretary Abul Kashem Liton and representatives from Chuadanga and Meherpur also attended.

The chief guest said workers had contributed a great deal to the country, yet the state, government, leaders, members of parliament and ministers had never been seen to work sincerely to improve workers’ lot. “Everyone’s fortunes change, but the workers’ fortunes do not,” he said, which was why they had united under the federation’s banner.

Central president Atiqur Rahman said the minimum wage for workers should be set at 30,000 taka. In 2023, the minimum wage in the industrial sector was set at 12,500 taka, he noted – asking how a family could survive on that. To build a Bangladesh free of discrimination, workers must be treated without discrimination and given respect, he said, urging the government to improve workers’ living standards and ensure fair wages, medical care and the implementation of labor law.
