The nomination paper of BNP’s presidential candidate, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has been submitted by the party’s standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan.
He submitted the paper to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin, acting as the electoral authority, at the Election Bhaban at around 2:30pm on Thursday (13 August).
Among those who came to the Election Bhaban with the nomination were BNP senior leaders Abdul Moyeen Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Ray, chief whip Nurul Islam Moni, whip Rakibul Islam Bakul, Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu, Akhtaruzzaman Mia and A B M Ashraf Uddin Nizan, as well as the party’s joint secretaries general Shahid Uddin Chowdhury and Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel and their delegation.
Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan is the proposer of Mirza Fakhrul’s nomination and Gayeshwar Chandra Ray the seconder. EC secretary Akhtar Ahmed was also present with the CEC when the nomination was received.
Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was chosen as the presidential candidate at a meeting of the party’s national standing committee held in front of the prime minister’s office at the Secretariat.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi gave the information to journalists. “On behalf of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, I am pleased to announce that the party’s committed secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has become the party’s presidential candidate,” he said.
“A short while ago, this decision was taken at a meeting with the party’s respected chairman and the prime minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s candidate is Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir,” Rizvi added.
Earlier, the nomination paper of the 11-party alliance’s candidate, Oli Ahmad, was submitted by the alliance’s coordinator and Jamaat assistant secretary general, Hamidur Rahman Azad.
The presidential election will be held on 20 August.
