The government will seek the maximum punishment in the Ramisa murder and rape case, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said. He made the remarks on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier, the minister said Bangladesh’s judiciary is more independent than in many other countries, with the government having no control over the posting or discipline of Supreme Court judges. “We have also seen a different form of that independence in the past, where allegations of political influence were raised,” he said.

On the backlog of cases, he said about 4.5 million cases are currently pending in the country — a logjam created by the relatively small number of judges and lawyers. He stressed the importance of ensuring justice in the Ramisa murder case.
