The freedom fighter and former freedom fighters’ commander of Jashore’s Keshabpur upazila, Mohammad Ali, 75, has been killed in a road accident. His death has cast a shadow of mourning across Keshabpur. Freedom fighters, political leaders, public representatives, leaders of social and cultural organisations and people of every level have expressed deep grief at the sudden death of this organiser of the liberation war and social worker.
The tragic accident took place at about 1:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Michael Mor area of Keshabpur municipality. Mohammad Ali was the son of the late Makhsed Ali Mridha of Patrapara village in the upazila and a former commander of the Keshabpur upazila Freedom Fighters’ Council. According to local sources, Mohammad Ali was coming from his home towards Keshabpur town by motorcycle. When he reached the Michael Mor area on the way, a passenger bus from Satkhira, registration Bhola-Ja-11-0008, ran him over. He was seriously injured.
Local passers-by quickly rescued him after the accident. On being informed, fire service personnel also reached the scene and joined the rescue. He was later taken to Keshabpur upazila health complex, where the doctor on duty in the emergency department declared him dead. The dead man’s son, Amjad Hossain, the land assistant officer of Chaluahati union, confirmed his father’s death.
On receiving news of the accident, Keshabpur police reached the scene and seized the bus. The bus’s driver and helper, however, managed to flee the scene. SI Sanjay of Keshabpur police station said the freedom fighter Mohammad Ali had been killed in the road accident. The bus has been seized and preparations are under way to take legal action in the case.
Mohammad Ali worked for a long time for the rights and welfare of freedom fighters. He also played an active role in various social development activities in the area. For his leadership, honesty and patriotism he was known as a highly respected figure among local people. Leaders of the local Freedom Fighters’ Council, political organisations and social and cultural circles have expressed deep grief and sorrow at his death. In their messages of condolence they prayed for the salvation of his soul and offered sincere sympathy to the members of his bereaved family.
The family said the timings of the funeral prayer and burial of the freedom fighter Mohammad Ali would be formally announced later. The people of Keshabpur are in mourning today at the loss of this brave son who believed in the spirit of the liberation war. His working life, his patriotism and his love for people will remain memorable to local people for a long time.
