Two held with tokay geckos in Mirsarai

Jorarganj police in Chattogram’s Mirsarai have arrested two suspected traffickers along with tokay geckos.

They were arrested at about 3 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, from the bus stand of Baraiyarhat municipality in the upazila. They were sent to court on Friday, July 24.

The arrested are Md Mamun Hossen, alias Emon, 37, son of the late Alal Hossen of the Guchhabil area of Manikchhari upazila in Khagrachhari district, and Nolapru Marma, 27, son of the late Achai Marma of the Gobmara area of the same upazila.

According to police sources, acting on secret information, a team led by the officer-in-charge (OC) of Jorarganj police station, Abdul Halim — with the help of Kamal Hossen, associate station officer of the Dhumghat forest customs and inspection post in the Karerhat range of the Chattogram North Forest Division — conducted a raid at the Baraiyarhat bus stand and arrested them. Sensing the presence of police, they tried to flee. A search of the bag they were carrying recovered two live tokay geckos. Their market value is about 2 lakh taka.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Jorarganj police station, Md Abdul Halim, said: “A case has been filed against those arrested under the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act. They were sent to the court today, Friday.”
