161,394 livestock killed in Chattogram floods

Floods have killed 161,394 head of livestock in the Chattogram region. In money terms the loss comes to about 77 crore 15 lakh taka. In addition, 10,991 farms were affected by the floods. These figures appear in a post-flood report by the Chattogram divisional livestock office. According to the data, Chattogram district was the worst affected.

The report says damage worth 77 crore 15 lakh 2,240 taka occurred across 191 unions in 45 upazilas of five districts of the Chattogram division. In Chattogram district alone the loss was 60 crore 6 lakh 81,140 taka. Elsewhere the loss was 13 crore 53 lakh 91,110 taka in Cox’s Bazar, 17 lakh 47,000 taka in Bandarban, 2 crore 99 lakh 82,000 taka in Rangamati and a total of 37 lakh 1,000 taka in Khagrachhari.

The deputy director (veterinary public health) of the Chattogram divisional livestock office, Dr Muhammad Izmal Hasan, confirmed the matter, saying field-level data had been collected on how animals and poultry were affected in the post-flood period. This yielded a loss estimate of 77 crore 15 lakh taka.

According to the data, the losses were 17 crore 55 lakh 72,000 taka across 4,756 livestock farms; 19 crore 72 lakh 96,500 taka across 6,235 poultry farms; 5 crore 17 lakh 92,000 taka on 910 tonnes of granular feed; 21 crore 56 lakh 85,000 taka on 14,265 tonnes of straw; and 8 crore 26 lakh 14,000 taka on 9,129 tonnes of grass. Dead livestock and poultry accounted for a loss of 4 crore 85 lakh 42,740 taka. The floods killed 71 cattle, 165 goats, 50 sheep, 158,600 chickens and 2,508 ducks.

In addition, across the five districts, 223,390 cattle, 4,755 buffalo, 160,087 sheep, 2,845,828 chickens and 70,370 ducks fell sick. The sick animals and poultry are being treated.
