Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel must end its reliance on US military aid and build up its own weapons system.
According to a video shared by the Israeli prime minister’s office, Netanyahu said in a speech to soldiers last week: ‘I deeply appreciate the support we have received from our American friends. But we must free ourselves from this dependence and create our own independent weapons system.’
Netanyahu’s comment came at a time when US pressure on Israel to reduce its attacks in southern Lebanon was steadily increasing. Israel holds a large part of southern Lebanon.
Despite the US pressure, however, Netanyahu insisted that Israeli forces would continue to hold southern Lebanon and would ‘pulverise’ the infrastructure of the armed group Hezbollah there.
