The death toll from Venezuela’s twin earthquakes has risen to 164, with at least 971 people injured, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced on the country’s state television on Thursday.
The two powerful earthquakes — magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, separated by 39 seconds — struck on Wednesday and are among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century. Tremors were felt across the region.
La Guaira state, north of the capital Caracas, has sustained the worst damage and has been declared a disaster zone. State television footage showed rescue workers pulling three children, dusty but alive, from the rubble of collapsed buildings in the state.
Rodríguez said dozens of buildings had collapsed in La Guaira and described the scale of destruction as “a genuine tragedy.” Rescue and relief operations are being intensified across the affected region.
