The detention of Benazir was a credit to Interpol, not to the country’s police, Jamaat-e-Islami chief and opposition leader in the Jatiya Sangsad Shafiqur Rahman said. He made the comment during an exchange with journalists at the Sylhet Circuit House on Sunday (June 14) night.
Shafiqur Rahman said it was Interpol’s arrangement against Benazir Ahmed that made his detention possible. He claimed that neither the red notice against him nor international-level efforts had been pursued properly during the current government’s tenure.
He also said that although Benazir’s arrest was an achievement for Bangladesh, there was no scope to show excessive enthusiasm over it. Whether he would be brought back to the country would depend on the government’s political goodwill, he said.
The Jamaat chief also spoke about the elections and the political situation. He said that while there was an expectation of a meaningful election after a long time, questions remained about the outcome. The party had accepted the election in the greater interest of the country, he said.
He further claimed that rejecting the election could create instability in the country. On the border situation, Shafiqur Rahman alleged that incitement was being given from inside and outside the country. He added that there would be no compromise on the question of the country’s independence and sovereignty.
