MOSCOW — Russia successfully test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), with President Vladimir Putin saying the nuclear-capable Sarmat is the world’s most powerful missile, Al Jazeera reported.
Footage aired on Russian state television showed Sergei Karakayev, commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, briefing Putin on the successful launch. Putin said the Sarmat would be formally inducted into the Russian armed forces by the end of this year.
“This is the most powerful missile in the world,” Putin said in a televised address. He said the missile’s warhead has four times the destructive capability of comparable Western missiles. Russia says the Sarmat has sub-orbital flight capability and a range of more than 35,000 kilometers. Putin said it can defeat all current and future missile defense systems.
Known in the West as Satan II, the missile is being developed to replace the Soviet-era Voyevoda missile.
Work on the Sarmat program began in 2011, but its development has faced numerous setbacks. Before Tuesday’s test, the missile had been successfully tested only once. A 2024 test reportedly ended in a major explosion.
