Didier Deschamps has the distinction of winning the World Cup as both a player and a coach. He captained France to their first World Cup title in 1998 and then delivered the trophy again as coach in 2018.

On Sunday, Deschamps set a new World Cup record. By beating Paraguay to reach the quarterfinals, he recorded his 17th match win as a World Cup coach, surpassing the record of Germany’s former coach Helmut Schon, who won 16 matches.

Deschamps is now the most successful coach in World Cup history by match victories — a dual record achieved in a single day as France advanced to the last eight behind goals from Kylian Mbappe.
