Message of peace from Delhi meeting, a pledge to work together

Despite various challenges and incidents of tension at the border in recent times, Bangladesh and India have reaffirmed their commitment to move forward along the path of dialogue. A joint statement issued after a four-day director general-level meeting of the border forces in New Delhi placed special emphasis on strengthening peace, stability and mutual cooperation at the border, and expressed a commitment to work together.

At the 57th director general-level meeting, which began on June 9 and ended on June 11, the Bangladesh delegation was led by BGB Director General Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and the Indian delegation was led by BSF Director General Praveen Kumar.

The joint statement said both forces would work closely to keep the two countries’ border peaceful, secure and free of crime. Both sides agreed to reduce unwanted incidents at the border, increase mutual communication and resolve emerging problems through the rapid exchange of information.

The meeting held detailed discussions on border killings, irregular crossings, human trafficking, drug and arms smuggling, border infrastructure construction and various aspects of border management. Both sides expressed a commitment to maintain a spirit of cooperation in tackling these challenges.

According to diplomatic observers, although various questions and differences over the border have arisen in recent times, the lengthy and open discussions between the two countries’ top border officials carry a positive message. Such meetings, they said, play an important role in building trust and cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

According to experts, relations between Bangladesh and India are not limited to border security alone; the two countries’ ties are steadily expanding in many areas, including trade, connectivity, energy, education, culture and regional cooperation. Against that backdrop, trying to resolve any border-related issue through discussion and mutual understanding is encouraging for the future.

In the joint statement, both forces stressed maintaining a peaceful environment at the border as well as following a humanitarian approach. The two sides also pledged to work together to ensure the safety and normal life of ordinary people in border areas.

According to analysts, at a time when various tensions and conflicts over border issues are being seen around the world, regular dialogue and mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and India could set a positive example for South Asia. The Delhi meeting is therefore being seen not just as a discussion on border management, but as an important step toward further strengthening trust, cooperation and future partnership between the two neighboring countries. Those involved hope that if the meeting’s decisions are implemented, peace and stability at the border will be further consolidated and Bangladesh-India relations will reach new heights.
