Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met water, environmental and engineering experts Tuesday to discuss Bangladesh’s water-management challenges and sustainable solutions.
The meeting was held Aug. 4 at the Prime Minister’s Office under the Cabinet Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Footsteps Bangladesh, a social development organization, led a delegation of specialists and representatives from organizations working in the environmental, water and engineering sectors. They presented their experience and recommendations on water-management problems, existing constraints and possible solutions.
The experts recommended long- and medium-term planning, the use of modern technology, stronger coordination among agencies and effective measures that account for the effects of climate change.
Participants discussed restoring canals, maintaining the stability of rivers and embankments, improving urban drainage, treating wastewater and managing rainwater. They also emphasized the need for coordinated and effective urban planning amid rapid urbanization.
After hearing the experts, Rahman assured them of his cooperation in advancing sustainable development, protecting the environment and ensuring safe and effective water management for citizens.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar and BNP Special Secretary Belayet Hossain attended the meeting.
Other participants included Footsteps Bangladesh Trustee and Head of Partnerships Fasbir Eskandar, President Shah Rafayat Chowdhury and Vice President Mohammad Taki Yasir; Tariq Bin Yousuf, a former chief engineer of a World Bank waste-management project; United International University Professor Mujibur Rahman; Red Orange Director Alok Kumar Majumder and Deputy Director Samiul Islam; Youth for NDC Executive Director Amanullah Parag; GarbageMan founder Fahid Uddin Shuvo; and urban and rural planner SM Mehedi Hasan.
