Four killed as bus hits auto-rickshaw in Patuakhali

Four people, including a mother and daughter travelling in a battery-run auto-rickshaw, have been killed after being struck by a Dhaka-bound bus in Patuakhali. The accident happened at about 11.30pm on Saturday (September 19) in the Dhalu Gazi Mor area near Bashak bazar on the Dhaka-Kuakata highway.

Those killed were the auto-rickshaw driver Kaiyum Pyada, 50, of Khontakhali village in Amkhola union of Galachipa upazila; Shilpi Rani, 40, of the Boubazar area in the same union; her daughter Bithi Rani, 22; and Md Jahangir Hossain, 28, of Barogabua village in Golkhali union.

Local sources said Shilpi Rani, who ran a tea stall in the Boubazar area, hired an auto-rickshaw from Boubazar on Saturday afternoon and went to Patuakhali to take her pregnant daughter Bithi Rani to a doctor.

On the way home after the appointment that night, as they reached the Bashak bazar area of the Dhaka-Kuakata highway, a Dhaka-bound Imran Travels bus that had left Taltali in Barguna struck the auto-rickshaw. Both vehicles fell into the ditch beside the road.

Three of those in the auto-rickshaw died at the scene and the fourth died on the way to hospital. Patuakhali police seized the Imran Travels vehicle after the accident.

Galachipa police officer-in-charge Md Imtiaz Ahmed said that since the accident site falls under Patuakhali Sadar police station, legal action would be taken by Patuakhali police.

Confirming the accident, Patuakhali Sadar police officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman said the bus and the auto-rickshaw involved had been recovered. Legal action over the incident is in process.
