Police in Galachipa, Patuakhali, have detained a father and son with 135 litres of locally made liquor hidden in drums beside a pond.

The liquor was recovered on Monday (September 28) in the Gramardan area of ward 4 of Panpatti union in the upazila.

The detained are Md Al Amin Mir, 50, and his son Md Rabbi Mir, 30. Ten grams of cannabis were also recovered from Rabbi Mir.

Local sources said the father and son had been secretly making and selling local liquor for a long time. On Monday, local people searched their house on suspicion of drugs and found drums buried in the ground on the south side of the pond next to the house, containing a large quantity of liquor. After they told police, a team from Galachipa police station went to the scene and carried out the raid.

In initial questioning, the father and son admitted that they had long been collecting the raw materials themselves and making the liquor to sell retail and wholesale, police said.

Galachipa police station officer-in-charge Md Imtiaz Ahmed said a case has been filed against the two under the Narcotics Control Act, and anti-drug drives will continue.
