A scuffle between senior and junior students and the vandalising of a room have taken place at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) over a Facebook post. At least three or four students were injured.
The incidents happened on Wednesday at the university’s A Keramat Ali Hall and in the Paris Road area of the campus.
University sources and students said an argument over a post on Facebook broke out between Shibbil Ahmed (2023-24 session) and Siam Ahmed (2022-23 session), students of the faculty of business administration. Tension then spread between the two sides and at one stage turned into scuffles and vandalism.
It is alleged that the door and windows of a room in A Keramat Ali Hall were smashed early on Wednesday. A student was hurt by flying window glass, and a laptop in the room was damaged.
Following this, tension arose again between students of the two sides in the Paris Road area at about 2pm, and at one stage they came to blows.
Witnesses said Siam and Palak Ahmed went to Paris Road on hearing that Siam’s friend Ifti was being held. An argument between the two sides there led to a clash in which several students were injured.
Shibbil Ahmed alleged that a senior student smashed the door and windows of their room at night, that one of his classmates was hurt by flying glass, and that a laptop was damaged.
Siam Ahmed alleged that his friend Ifti was held and that he and Palak Ahmed were forced to go to Paris Road, where several students attacked them after an argument.
The university’s proctor, Prof Abul Bashar Khan, said the matter had come to the administration’s notice and that a committee would be formed to investigate and the necessary action taken.
