A homeless volunteer wing leader, Md. Jahidul Islam Omi, has taken shelter at a BNP office in Naldanga, Natore, along with his bedding, pillows and furniture. A visit to the scene on Wednesday (July 8) found him staying at the Madhanagar Ward 8 BNP office in the upazila with his bedding and furniture.

Local residents said Jahidul Islam Omi is the son of Md. Akkas Ali of Bashila village in the upazila and serves as organizing secretary of the Madhanagar union volunteer wing.

They said that due to his involvement with BNP party activities, he was subjected to various forms of persecution by opponents for 17 years. His wife and family members left him to escape political harassment. He subsequently lived a miserable existence, staying at the homes of various well-wishers.

They further said that even after the fascist government fled on August 5, 2024, he received no benefits. He has no home. Left with no choice, he has taken shelter at the party office.

On-site observation found that he works as a laborer during the day and returns to the party office at night, where he cooks his own meals and spends the night.

The affected Jahidul Islam Omi said: “I’ve lived in others’ homes for years on end. How much longer can I live like this? How many years can this go on?”

He said: “I lost my family because of my involvement in BNP politics. My wife, children and father left me. No political patron stood by me. No one who made promises kept them. My request to the party leaders and the prime minister is that they arrange some way for me to make a living.”

Madhanagar union volunteer wing senior vice-president Raihan Mina and Bashila Ward 8 BNP president Sirajul Islam said: “Our brother Jahidul Islam is a very helpless and devoted party man. He has been forced to take shelter at the BNP office. We want the party leaders to arrange something permanent for him. That is our expectation.”
