One of the largest fires in Norway’s recent history has occurred, burning more than a hundred homes. Hundreds of people have been moved to safety to limit the damage, the country’s authorities said. Police said the fire started at a townhouse in the southern Norwegian city of Drammen at around 3:30pm local time on Friday (18 July). Drammen is located about 34 kilometres (21 miles) south-west of Norway’s capital, Oslo.

Within a short time the fire spread to surrounding areas and nearby forest, which firefighters are struggling to bring under control; they were still working to contain it on Saturday morning. Norway’s Directorate for Civil Protection said it was the largest fire of its kind in modern times. The state broadcaster NRK reported that hundreds of people had been taken to a temporary shelter since the fire. Police said no residents had been reported missing so far, but the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
