A 32-year-old man with mental disabilities died while receiving treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital, eight days after being tied to a tree and tortured on suspicion of theft in Narail. Police said the existing case will be upgraded to a murder case.
The victim, Anwar Hosen, a resident of Banshgram in Narail Sadar and the son of Kaushir Molla, died early Thursday morning.
His elder brother Nobir Hosen had filed a case at Narail Sadar police station the previous Monday, naming five individuals and several unidentified persons.
According to the FIR, the victim left home around 9 a.m. on June 24. When he did not return that night, his family searched for him and found him severely injured at Narail District Hospital the following morning.
The FIR stated that Prosenjit Biswas, Sourav Biswas, Apurbo Biswas, Akash Biswas, Hriday Biswas, and others detained the victim on suspicion of theft and tied him to a tree near Prosenjit’s house in Gobra Malopara overnight, beating him repeatedly.
The FIR further stated that Prosenjit attempted to strangle the victim with a towel, while others struck him with an iron rod, causing severe injuries. Police recovered him on June 25 and admitted him to the district hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
All accused have been absconding since the incident. One accused’s mother claimed her son had taken the victim to the hospital and did not know who beat him.
The victim’s brother Nobir Hosen said: “My brother was beaten by a mob on suspicion of theft because of his mental condition. Despite all efforts, I could not save him. I demand the arrest and trial of those involved.”
Narail Sadar police station officer-in-charge Ajay Kumar Kundu said the case will now be converted to a murder case and efforts to arrest the accused are continuing.
