Several people were injured when leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed over control of a residential hall at Dhaka Alia Madrasa around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Tension spread across the campus before law enforcement personnel brought the situation under control.
Witnesses and sources familiar with the incident said tensions between the two student organizations had persisted for some time before turning into a clash. The sources said Chhatra Dal activists initially controlled the campus before Chhatra Shibir members took a counter-position and gained control of the grounds.
Activists from both sides were seen carrying locally made weapons as they chased one another and confronted each other, according to witnesses. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show people carrying such weapons and several injured people on the ground, but the footage was not independently verified.
Classmates took the injured to hospitals. Their exact number and identities were not immediately known, although witnesses said several had been seriously injured.
Police deployed additional personnel after restoring order. The campus was relatively calm at the time of the latest report, but the atmosphere remained tense.
Neither Chhatra Dal nor Chhatra Shibir had issued an official statement, and law enforcement agencies had not immediately released a formal account.
