A reconciliation meeting has been held to defuse recent tensions between activists of Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir on the Dhaka Alia Madrasa campus in the capital. At the meeting, leaders of the two organisations agreed to ensure a peaceful environment and coexistence on campus rather than blaming one another over past incidents. The meeting took place on Sunday, 9 August, at the Dhaka Alia Madrasa campus.

Mediating on behalf of the BNP was Dhaka-7 MP Md Hamidur Rahman Hamid, and on behalf of Jamaat, Dhaka-5 MP Md Kamal Hossain. A deputy commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the madrasa’s vice-principal and teachers, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) GS S M Farhad, and Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir activists were present.

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir central publicity secretary S M Farhad confirmed the meeting. The talks focused on resolving the misunderstanding and tension between the two organisations arising from recent incidents. Leaders of both sides agreed on maintaining a normal academic environment on campus and preventing any future conflict.

After the meeting, Farhad said: “Rather than blaming each other over what happened in the past, the main focus of the discussion was how to maintain a good and peaceful environment going forward.” He said a positive decision had been reached to step back from conflict, with emphasis on maintaining a peaceful campus and ensuring the safety of all students.

The meeting also discussed the losses suffered by Dhaka Alia Madrasa students; it was said that the cases of students affected by the recent incidents would be resolved in discussion with the institution’s principal. After the reconciliation, the president of the Dhaka Alia Madrasa unit of Chhatra Shibir, Md Abdul Alim, was seen embracing a Chhatra Dal leader as those present applauded in welcome. The leaders felt that while political ideologies on a campus may differ, they should in no way become a cause of conflict or of damaging the academic environment, stressing mutual tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
