Despite poor weather, holiday travelers crowded Dhaka’s Kamalapur railway station on Wednesday morning, leaving the capital to spend Eid ul-Adha with loved ones. Trains heading to northern Bangladesh saw the heaviest pressure.

Many passengers complained that even with tickets, they could not find their assigned seats and had to stand or travel in cramped conditions. Some were seen riding on train rooftops at considerable risk.

Railway sources said 18 trains had departed Kamalapur by 10 a.m. The Nilsagar Express left nearly three hours behind schedule.

Railway director general Afzal Hossain said poor weather had slowed trains. Additional time spent loading and unloading passengers also caused delays, he said.

Efforts are under way to control rooftop travel, Hossain said, though the overwhelming passenger volume has made full enforcement difficult. Railway authorities expect pressure to ease in the afternoon and conditions to normalize.
