France wants to play an active role in the coming US-Iran talks on Iran’s nuclear programme. At the same time, it will not agree to lift the UN sanctions imposed on Iran unless it is satisfied with the terms of a final deal, the country’s foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, has said, according to Middle East Eye.
On Friday, he said that to ensure stability in the Middle East, the talks must include not only the nuclear programme but also Iran’s ballistic-missile programme and its support for regional proxy groups.
Barrot said UN sanctions would be lifted only in exchange for major concessions from Iran. He recalled that, as a permanent, veto-wielding member of the UN Security Council, France’s consent was required to lift such sanctions.
In his words: “Our goal is to bring about a fundamental change in Iran’s position. As a member of the Security Council, France’s view is extremely important to resolving this crisis.”
Under an understanding reached between the United States and Iran this week, talks on Iran’s nuclear programme will be held within the next 60 days, and the final deal will be presented for the approval of the UN Security Council.
France, the United Kingdom and Germany, which had been outside the talks in recent months, are now keen to play a role in shaping the next round.
