At least 28 people were killed when a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in northern Ethiopia on Monday. A large number of people were injured in the accident, local authorities said.

Local authorities said on Facebook that the bus, travelling from the town of Dessie in the Amhara region to the capital, Addis Ababa, fell into a ravine about 100 metres deep.

Officials said 28 people died in the accident. Many other passengers were seriously or slightly injured. The surviving passengers were taken to various medical centres. An investigation into the incident is under way.

Earlier, in December 2024, more than 70 people were killed when a passenger vehicle carrying people to a wedding in southern Ethiopia fell into a river.
