A housewife, Anwara Begum, 40, has died after being bitten by a venomous cobra in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria. The incident happened on Thursday morning, June 18, in Tarua village in the upazila.
Anwara Begum was the wife of Mohsin Mia, a village police officer of the Tarua union council.
According to family members, Anwara Begum went to take rice from a sack kept in a corner of the house at about 7 a.m. to cook. A venomous cobra hidden in the folds of the sack bit her. Hearing her scream, family members rushed over and moved the sack, and the snake came out and fled into nearby bushes.
Relatives quickly took her to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where she died at about 9 a.m. while undergoing treatment.
Mohsin Mia, the woman’s husband, said he tied a cloth above the wound immediately after the bite and took his wife to the hospital. Treatment began at the hospital but she could not be saved in the end, he said.
Dr. Md. Shahin Bhuiyan, resident medical officer at Brahmanbaria General Hospital, said it was vital to bring a snakebite patient to the hospital as quickly as possible. Necessary treatment and antivenom were given based on the patient’s physical condition, he said, but she could not be saved despite all efforts because the venom’s effect was extremely severe.
Rafe Mohammad Chhora, Ashuganj upazila executive officer, said he had received news of the death of a village police officer’s wife in Tarua union from a venomous snakebite. Snake activity rises in rural areas during the monsoon, he said, urging everyone to keep homes, grain-storage sites and surroundings clean and to stay cautious.
