An abandoned mortar shell has been recovered again in Chougachha, Jashore. It was recovered on Thursday morning, June 18, from a field in Afra village in the upazila’s Phulsara union. It is now in the custody of Chougachha police.

Nasir Uddin, 50, a resident of Afra village in Phulsara union, was working in his mahogany orchard when he saw the abandoned mortar shell on the western side of the orchard, according to accounts. Residents then informed Chougachha police station. Residents said a direct battle took place between enemy forces and freedom fighters in the area during the 1971 Liberation War. They believe an unexploded mortar shell used during the war had been buried underground and became visible long afterward when soil was dug up.

Ruhul Amin, former commander of the upazila freedom fighters’ council, said a direct battle took place between enemy forces and freedom fighters in the area during the 1971 Liberation War. The abandoned mortar shell could date from the Liberation War period, he said.
