No decision or directive has come to the National University about closing any honours-level subject — including Bangla, history and philosophy — so there is no reason to be misled by such reports, vice-chancellor professor Dr A S M Amanullah has said. He made the remarks in a conversation with Dainik Shiksha on Tuesday (9 June).

“Neither the government nor we have any decision to close any honours course at the National University,” the VC said, repeating that no decision or directive had reached the university about shutting honours subjects such as Bangla, history or philosophy, and that there was no scope for confusion over such reports.

Reports published in various media on Tuesday morning had said a major reform initiative was being taken to make the education system skills- and employment-oriented rather than certificate-dependent. Those reports said that, under a draft model, the traditional honours courses of about six subjects — including Bangla, history and philosophy — could be scrapped and merged with other subjects. The reports also said there were plans to add technology-based subjects such as artificial intelligence (AI), cyber security, outsourcing and freelancing to the curriculum to expand employment opportunities, alongside establishing career centres at colleges and teaching students seven foreign languages.
