Many accidents occurred in Dhaka while people slaughtered and handled sacrificial animals during Eid ul-Adha. At least 33 people were treated at the capital’s Pongu Hospital from Thursday morning for injuries — broken limbs from kicks, gouges and rope pulls, severed fingers and torn tendons. Over the same period, another 168 people were injured in motorcycle and other accidents, of whom 89 were admitted in serious condition.

According to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), 33 people came to the Pongu (NITOR) hospital with such cuts and fractures after the sacrifices began following morning prayers. Another 168 people sought treatment over the past 15 hours for injuries related to the slaughter and to motorcycle accidents. Hospital authorities admitted 89 of them with somewhat serious injuries.

Patients seeking treatment were seen Thursday at the Pongu (NITOR) hospital in Dhaka’s Agargaon.

Dr. Jibanananda Halder, associate professor in NITOR’s orthopaedic surgery department, said: “From midnight last night until 3 p.m. today, a total of 168 patients came here. And 33 came from this morning with injuries related to the sacrifice. Of these total patients, 89 were admitted.”

Fewer critically injured patients came today, he said. “Patients are coming with cut fingers, severed tendons, cut hands, cut feet, cut waists — these kinds of injuries from performing the sacrifice. Most who came had the kind of problems that arise during the slaughter. Major accident cases were higher yesterday. Two patients died yesterday. Among yesterday’s patients, some were slaughter-related, but most were motorcycle accident patients.”
