To mark the death anniversary of the legendary novelist, playwright and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed, the drama club of the University of Creative Technology, Chattogram (UCTC) has staged his classic play “Nimful.”

In the production, held on Tuesday at the university’s own auditorium, students vividly brought out the play’s human appeal, rural life and the subtle emotions of relationships. Audience presence and interest were notable throughout.

Various roles were played by Junayed Hossain Jawad (Hedayet Chowdhury), Farzana Munshi Sima (Madina), Rifat Hasan (Master), Imtiaz Imti (Fazlu), Sofol Dash (Kuddus), Sawad Sami (Mona Dakat), Arian (Mona Dakat’s son), Maruf Chowdhury (headmaster), Siam (member), Zainal (Arnab Dutta), Tawseen Akter (Saleha’s mother) and Umme Samiha (Saleha). The production was directed by Maya Dutta.

Junayed Hossain Jawad, who played Hedayet Chowdhury, said: “Acting in a Humayun Ahmed play is a matter of pride for us and also a big responsibility. We rehearsed for a long time to make the character believable. The audience’s love is our greatest reward.”

Director Maya Dutta said: “Humayun Ahmed’s plays are not just entertainment; they teach us to think anew about life, relationships and society. By staging his play with a new generation of students, we wanted to pay tribute to his work.”

One member of the audience said the students’ acting was sincere and mature, and that they had created the play’s atmosphere well even within a modest production. Another said the initiative to stage his play on his death anniversary was truly praiseworthy and would enrich students’ cultural practice.

After the show, the audience congratulated the performers and director. The organizers said such events would continue in future to bring important works of Bengali drama and culture to a new generation.
