BNP collects two nomination papers for presidential election

The ruling BNP has collected two nomination papers from the office of the Election Commission’s returning officer for the presidential election.

National parliament chief whip Nurul Islam Moni and the party’s senior joint secretary general, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, collected the nominations from the chief electoral officer’s office at the Election Building in the capital’s Agargaon on Sunday (9 August).

The Election Commission (EC) announced the presidential election schedule last Thursday. Under it, EC senior secretary Akhtar Ahmed said 13 August has been set as the date for submitting nomination papers and voting will be held on 20 August.

The EC secretary said that, under section 5(3) of the Presidential Election Act 1991, the chief election commissioner finalised the schedule in consultation with the Speaker, and the overall electoral process would be completed at the Election Commission’s building and in the parliament session as scheduled.

He said that, under the schedule, nomination papers will be submitted on 13 August (Thursday) from 10am to 4pm at the electoral officer’s office; scrutiny will be on 16 August (Sunday) from 10am at the EC building; the last day for withdrawing candidacy is 18 August (Tuesday) until 4pm; and voting will be held on 20 August (Thursday) from 2pm to 5pm in the national parliament session hall.

Senior secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the voter list for the presidential election had already been prepared, and that only the schedule had been published for now, with updates and progress to be shared formally with the media later.
