A high-level government team has conducted inspections and community consultations in Dhaka-15, the constituency of opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, on the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The team was led by State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam.

The daylong inspection on Wednesday (July 1) began with a community meeting with local residents at Lane 3, West Shewrapara. Opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton were present.

The state minister and representatives subsequently inspected Anandbazar Canal, the lane adjacent to Purba Manipur Baitur Rahim Jame Mosque, Baishteki Sarkar Bari intersection, and Ibrahimpur Government Primary School grounds, among other locations. At each site, he spoke separately with residents and observed existing problems firsthand.

Residents raised complaints about water shortages, gas supply problems, drainage systems, waterlogging, damaged roads, illegal encroachment, traffic congestion, drugs and juvenile gang activity, and excessive fees at educational institutions.

During the consultation, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam said the government is giving special priority to development in the opposition leader’s constituency. He said he came as team leader on the prime minister’s directive.

Praising opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman for setting an example of cooperation in the national interest, the state minister said coordinated initiatives are being taken to address all relevant problems, with permanent solutions to be implemented in phases on a priority basis.

“The Local Government Division alone cannot solve all problems. Coordinated efforts from WASA, Titas Gas, the Power Division, and all agencies are needed,” he added, also calling on citizens to play a responsible role.

Opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said alleviating public suffering is their primary goal. “We are working not for formalities but to ensure practical and effective solutions,” he said.

Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton said the problems have already been identified and implementation initiatives will be taken on a priority basis. He assured visible changes in phases and urged everyone to remain vigilant against dengue.

Local residents present described the initiative as positive, saying such coordinated action between the government and opposition will set a new precedent in political culture and help resolve longstanding problems in Dhaka-15.
