A street in New York has been named after Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi-American US police officer killed by a gunman. The sign for “Detective First Grade Didarul Islam Way” was unveiled on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx. Didarul Islam served with the New York Police Department (NYPD).

On 28 July 2025, the 36-year-old officer was shot dead by a gunman on Park Avenue in Manhattan. That day, a young man entered a high-rise on Park Avenue and began firing indiscriminately; Didarul was killed by gunfire while risking his life to stop the attacker. He was posthumously promoted to detective first grade, and New York City authorities later moved to name a street in his honour.

Amid rain on Saturday, senior New York City officials, police officers, Didarul’s family members and Bangladeshis living in the United States attended the unveiling, including NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. In her remarks, Tisch respectfully recalled Didarul Islam’s bravery and career, saying the street would now carry the name of a man who had made New York his home and given his life to protect the city, and that he was the kind of officer every commanding officer hopes to have.

Kamrul Hasan, an NYPD detective and the husband of Didarul Islam’s younger sister, thanked everyone on behalf of the family, saying: “In his personal life, he had a mindset of helping people at every moment. That is why he received such a rare honour, and we too can feel proud.” Didarul’s wife, Jamila Islam, attended with their three children — Ahiyan, Azhan and Arham. A son of Moulvibazar district, Didarul Islam emigrated to the United States from Bangladesh in 2004 and joined the NYPD in 2013, living with his family in the Bronx.
