Brazil, the World Cup’s record five-time champions, were eliminated from the tournament yesterday after losing 2-1 to Norway in the fight for a quarter-final spot.
Following Brazil’s exit from the FIFA World Cup, German legend Lothar Matthäus sharply criticized the country’s star forward Neymar.
Writing in his column for Sky Germany, Matthäus said he was pleased by Brazil’s elimination. “Brazil is out, and I’m happy about it. I can no longer tolerate their constant complaining and theatrics,” he wrote.
Referring to Neymar’s conduct, the German legend said the Brazilian star’s behavior during a late penalty pointed to a bigger problem within the team.
Matthäus wrote that instead of taking the penalty quickly, Neymar got into an argument with the goalkeeper both before and after the shot. “This behavior shows he values his own ego more than the team’s success,” he wrote.
Neymar is ending his career as Brazil’s all-time top scorer, with 80 goals and 59 assists in 130 matches. Despite playing in four World Cups for his country, the star forward could not deliver Brazil a sixth title.
