Top Democratic lawmakers have voiced deep skepticism and anger over U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned possible peace deal with Iran. Calling the deal a major defeat for the United States, they have branded it effectively an ‘instrument of surrender.’

California Senator Adam Schiff, criticizing Trump’s move on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), wrote that the president says the war is over. He hopes Trump’s words come true. But many such statements have been heard before, along with a record of countless broken promises, he wrote. Schiff further alleged that even after starting a new war, Trump could not reduce its costs, which has deeply harmed the people of the United States.

Democratic Congress member Seth Moulton, meanwhile, described the possible deal as one of the worst deals in U.S. history. In an interview with the outlet MS NOW, he said it was an extremely dangerous deal. It was essentially nothing but an instrument of surrender handed over by Donald Trump to Iran’s supreme leader, he said.

Expressing anger, Moulton said the war had already cost U.S. taxpayers $100 billion and 14 American citizens had died. Yet in return a deal was being made that would merely reopen a sea passage that, he claimed, was already open before Trump started this ‘foolish’ war. After so much loss and expense, the deal could in no way be accepted as a U.S. victory, he said.
