A protest march and rally have been held demanding the arrest of the resigned president Md Sahabuddin, also known as Chuppu, whom the demonstrators accuse of being one of those behind share manipulation at Islami Bank and an associate of S Alam.
The Islami Bank Conscious Customers’ Forum organised the programme in front of the bank’s head office at Motijheel in the capital at midday on Wednesday.
Speakers at the rally alleged that Md Sahabuddin had given assistance behind the irregularities, corruption and plunder that took place in the country’s banking sector, including at Islami Bank, through the S Alam Group. They demanded an impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for those involved in destroying the banking sector and their associates.
The demonstrators demanded the arrest of Md Sahabuddin, that those involved in the plunder of banks be brought to justice, and that effective steps be taken to protect the interests of depositors.
During the programme the demonstrators chanted slogans and demanded a swift trial of those involved in corruption in the banking sector. They later ended the march peacefully.
The allegations set out above were made by speakers at the rally. BD Global Times has not established that any case has been filed against the former president over these claims, and he has made no response to them.
